What's in a name?

Nov 03, 2025

While teaching a class a few weeks ago, someone asked me, "Where did the name Pip & Pin come from?"

I'm always so interested to hear how other people came up with their names (especially because naming things is one of the hardest things for me!), so I thought I'd share my answer with you, too!

The first thing to know about Pip & Pin is that it was started by my sister and me, and when we would do craft markets together, the question wasn't "What does Pip & Pin mean?" but, "Which one's Pip and which one's Pin?". While neither of us is Pip OR Pin, the name does come from people. Specifically, our grandmothers.

'Pipsqueak' was the nickname of our paternal grandma, Gloria. 'Pip' for short, and she had a small tattoo on her arm with this moniker.

And 'Pin' comes from our maternal grandma, Anne. She had a huge craft room in the upstairs room of their house, and was always knitting and sewing and crafting away, and was actually the person who taught me how to knit way, way back in the day.

The name Pip & Pin is an homage to them ❤️

I'm so excited to finally announce that this winter I'll be taking a little trip to Sherwood Park, Alberta for a fantastic event hosted by the Yarn Rebels. Join me on Saturday, January 24th, in the morning for my class "Sweaters That Fit", where we talk all about how to create sweaters and cardigans that you'll actually want to wear, in the evening for a cozy night of conversation and a specially curated marketplace, or just, you know, do both!

A Provisional Cast On for the Perfect Fit
Did you know that you don't have to knit a sweater in the same order as the designer?  A few weeks ago, I started knitting the Paul Klee Sweater by Midori Hirose, but there was one thing I knew I wanted to change — the neckband.  It has a high neckline, almost mock turtleneck-like, and while it is gorgeous, I know it's not something I could wear without feeling like I'm being strangled.  So, ...
2026, a year of ✨joy✨
The other day, I sat at my absolute mess of a desk to answer some emails. Yarn. Everywhere. Swatches, project bags, and errant needles all over.  So, being a fresh new year, I wanted a fresh new start. I took everything yarn-related and brought it to my closet for organization. While doing this, I realized that over the past three months, I have tried to work on six new designs, none of which ...
