The Sleeves Make the Sweater

by Megan Williams
Jun 08, 2026

One of the most overlooked things about the earliest sweaters I made was the sleeves.

Now, I have always been in search of the perfect sweater, and even as a beginner, I was no different. I was constantly tinking and frogging and making adjustments until I got things just right, because it seemed like a waste to knit something I wasn't going to wear.

The issue was, I didn't really know what I was doing 😂

What would inevitably happen with every sweater is I would knit a sleeve (sometimes both), decide I didn't like it, rip it all out, make up some sort of adjustment on the fly, try again, realize that wasn't right either, and rinse and repeat until I was finally satisfied.

My most-sleeves-knit award goes to my Once and Floral Sweater, where I reknit both sleeves a whooping four times each. That's eight sleeves for one sweater!

But, when I started designing knitwear, I learned more about creating the exact silhouette I wanted, and then I realized that I could apply the same concepts to other designers' patterns as well!

I could manipulate the information in the pattern, balance it against how I wanted things to fit, and finally get what I wanted without spending all that extra time just winging it!

Do you find yourself stuggling with the same thing? Do you have a particular way you like your sleeves to fit and just aren't sure how to acheive it in a concrete, repeatable way?

I created the Custom Sleeve Shaping Mini Course just for you!

You'll learn how to make adjustments to the sleeves of any knitting pattern, so they'll fit exactly how you want them to - the first time.

Rainforest Knits
Every year, when it starts feeling a little more like Spring, this is the collection I think about.   Rainforest Knits came out in 2019, not long after Katie (my sister and co-founder of Pin & Pin) had moved to Hawai‘i. We realized we were both living in rainforests at the time, hers tropical and mine temperate, and that became the initial inspiration for this collection. But what really shape...
Why I'm Knitting a Sweater at the Wrong Gauge
A few weeks ago, I cast on a new sweater project, the Rosie Sweater by Le Knit. This one!    For this sweater, I'm using a gorgeous wool from Ancient Arts Fibres held with a strand of mohair from Knitting with Olive (my first time knitting a sweater with mohair, can you believe it?!).   And before I cast on, I swatched. I made two swatches, actually, one with the colourwork and one without, ...
How I Make Money as a Knitter
Making money as a small business is hard, and finding room to pay yourself is even harder. I spent many years as a knitter, working at craft markets and selling digital patterns online, and seemingly making a lot of money, only to see it go right back out the door.  So, what changed? Well, in short, I learned a system that allowed me to always make sure I was taking something home, and eventu...
