The Ashcroft Cardigan

Sep 26, 2025

Sometimes, a design idea pops in and is on the needles and into the world in a matter of months.

Sometimes, not so much.

This was one of those Not-So-Much times. From start to finish, this pattern took exactly two years until I was ready to hit "publish". And in truth, I couldn't tell you why! There weren't any big issues with the fit or the knitting or the yarn, or even the pattern writing. It was all very smooth. It just needed some extra time to marinate, I guess!

So, finally, I'm introducing our newest pattern, the Ashcroft Cardigan!

This special design combines all of my favourite things:

   ° An oversized, casual fit
   ° Deep V-neck shaping
° Silky smooth superwash merino wool
° And a little touch of something to keep it interesting

This cardigan was inspired by the everyday pieces in my wardrobe that I love to wear - versatile items that I can pair with anything, time and again. If you're into cozy staples and looking for something new to cast on this fall, this might be for you, too!

As always, this pattern is available in ten sizes, to fit chest measurements of approximately 28-65", and is designed to be worn with 8-12" of positive ease.

The yarn I've used for my sample is from the incomparable Fidley Dyeworks, in their SW Merino Worsted base in the colourway Ronan, which is the perfect medium-dark grey. (Not quite a charcoal, but almost there!)

And, if you're in the Vancouver area this weekend, they'll be vending at Knit City so you can scope out your perfect colourway in person.

Why I'm Knitting a Sweater at the Wrong Gauge
A few weeks ago, I cast on a new sweater project, the Rosie Sweater by Le Knit. This one!    For this sweater, I'm using a gorgeous wool from Ancient Arts Fibres held with a strand of mohair from Knitting with Olive (my first time knitting a sweater with mohair, can you believe it?!).   And before I cast on, I swatched. I made two swatches, actually, one with the colourwork and one without, ...
How I Make Money as a Knitter
Making money as a small business is hard, and finding room to pay yourself is even harder. I spent many years as a knitter, working at craft markets and selling digital patterns online, and seemingly making a lot of money, only to see it go right back out the door.  So, what changed? Well, in short, I learned a system that allowed me to always make sure I was taking something home, and eventu...
A Provisional Cast On for the Perfect Fit
Did you know that you don't have to knit a sweater in the same order as the designer?  A few weeks ago, I started knitting the Paul Klee Sweater by Midori Hirose, but there was one thing I knew I wanted to change — the neckband.  It has a high neckline, almost mock turtleneck-like, and while it is gorgeous, I know it's not something I could wear without feeling like I'm being strangled.  So, ...
